• Fell is a photographic documentation of the unsustainable logging practice within the Yarra State Forest in Melbourne’s outer east. The process of burning these coupes to prepare them for logging introduces many chemicals into the air and down into the waterways which run throughout the ranges. The pollution of the air and water is one of the many concerning issues brought on by the logging of these forests. There is an increased fire risk due to the elimination of damp ancient undergrowth which assists protecting the forests from bushfires. These woods have been logged since the 1860's and have supplied plentiful industry opportunities for locals but at a severe cost to the native Australian ecosystems established within these environments. The series aims tell a story of neglect but in a way that is not too literal, highlighting the beauty of these landscapes the intention was to emphasise the need to protect these ancient forests and ecosystems.

  • Fear is an individual experience that can be debilitating and controlling. It is hard to understand one’s phobia when not experiencing it personally further creating an isolating environment for that person. The extreme fear of being alone or isolated is not as well known, yet felt by many people on varying levels. A lot of this anxiety develops from the unknown and the lack of security that this person feels they have, this discomfort can be felt in many places including ones of comfort. Even if, as an individual, this fear known as autophobia may not be felt we can begin to image how this controls one’s mind. In open spaces, safe places, work, even home there is the constant worry of being alone, which becomes a dominating feeling that will control a person’s decision. Being afraid of isolation is a difficult fear to face as it is not something that can be physically overcome, it is very much a mental barrier.

  • A place of comfort and ease, a place of intimacy and reality, a home, a sanctuary. The home for many can mean different things, whether that is in the literal sense or it can have a deeper association for a feeling of belonging. The sanctuary can be described as a place of refuge and sacred, a sanctuary is somewhere where individuals go to feel safe and have a greater appreciation for their surroundings.
